We played an instrumental role in the passage of the Domestic Violence Protection Act: one of the first laws in the nation to create a civil action enabling survivors of domestic violence to get protection orders against abusers. RCW 10.99

Justice for Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse

We helped draft and pass a first-in-the-nation law that allows victims of childhood sexual abuse to more easily bring civil suit against their abusers. Senate Bill 6305

Lesbian Couple Wins Petition for Adoption

We submitted an amicus brief that helped a lesbian couple win a petition for adoption that allowed the non-biological mother to be legally recognized as a parent. At the time, there were only six known cases in the country where such adoptions had been granted, and this was the first to occur in Washington. In Re Representation of a Child

Abortion Clinic Blockaders Stopped

Anticipating the overturning of Roe v. Wade, we helped to draft and pass an initiative that added Roe’s protections to Washington law. Initiative 120

Law Protects Health Care Providers from Harassment

We worked with a coalition to pass the Clinic Access Bill, which protects all health care facilities in Washington from harassment and blockades. House Bill 1338

Montana Strikes Down Anti-Gay Law

Struck down Montana’s “deviate sexual conduct” law, which made it a felony to engage in any form of same-sex intimate conduct. Gryczan v. Montana

Military Reinstates Gay Colonel

We made the U.S. military reinstate Colonel Grethe Cammermeyer after she was discharged for being gay — and won a court ruling that said banning gay people from serving violates the Constitution’s equal protection clause. Cammermeyer v. Perry

Mother Protected from Unjust Prosecution

Settlements for Hearing-Impaired Survivors of Abuse

Domestic Benefits for 2SLGBTQ+ Employees

Relying on an argument we made in an amicus brief, the Montana Supreme Court ruled that the University of Montana must provide domestic partner benefits to 2SLGBTQ+ employees. Snetsinger v. Montana University System

Pharmacies Must Dispense Emergency Contraception

We worked with Planned Parenthood and other partners to stop pharmacists in Oregon and Washington from refusing to fill prescriptions for emergency contraception. Because of our advocacy, the Oregon and Washington Boards of Pharmacy adopted rules to end this discriminatory practice. The Drug War

Law Mandates Accurate, Inclusive Sex Ed

We helped persuade the Washington State Legislature to adopt the Healthy Youth Act (SB 5297), which mandates that sexuality education be medically accurate and not discriminate based on sexual orientation or gender. Senate Bill 5297

Domestic Partnership for Same-Sex and Senior Couples

We helped pass bills in three consecutive Washington legislative sessions that established, and then expanded, the rights of same-sex and senior couples to register as domestic partners, with all the rights and obligations of married couples under state law. 2007: Senate Bill 5336; 2008: House Bill 3104; 2009: Senate Bill 5688

Unemployment Benefits for Same-Sex Partner

We secured unemployment benefits for a man who had to leave his job to care for his same-sex partner. Lake v. Washington State Employment Security Department

No More Shackling of Pregnant People in Washington

Our lawsuit established that it is unconstitutional to shackle incarcerated pregnant people while they are in labor. Brawley v. Washington State Department of Corrections

We also helped pass a Washington law that limits the use of restraints on incarcerated people during pregnancy, labor, delivery, and postpartum recovery. House Bill 2747

Equal Rights for All Parents

We helped amend Washington’s parentage law to ensure that all parents, including 2SLGBTQ+ parents, have the same rights and responsibilities with respect to their children. House Bill 1267

In partnership with the Washington State Coalition Against Domestic Violence (WSCADV), we drafted a bill that helps domestic violence survivors keep long-term protection orders against their abusers. House Bill 1565

As a key member of the Seattle Coalition for a Healthy Workforce, we worked to shape Seattle’s Paid Sick and Safe Days law: one of the strongest laws of its kind in the country. Council Bill 117216

Marriage Equality in Washington

We served on the governing board of Washington United for Marriage and helped win the campaign to pass Washington’s marriage equality law. Later, we collaborated with the ACLU of Washington to defend the law against an attack via referendum. Senate Bill 6239

We led the effort to pass the Children of Incarcerated Parents Act, which helps preserve parent-child relationships when a parent is incarcerated (if doing so would be in the best interests of the child and the parent has maintained a meaningful role in the child’s life). House Bill 1284

Protection Order Secured for Survivor of Homophobic Attack

We won an appeal of an Oregon trial court’s denial of a protection order to a gay man who was subjected to anti-gay threats and an attack by his neighbor. Christensen v. Bosket

Court Rules Idaho Abortion Restrictions are Unconstitutional

A federal court struck down Idaho’s ban on medication abortions and abortions after 20 weeks. We submitted an amicus brief in support of the woman and physician who challenged the restrictions. McCormack v. Herzog

Nation's First Tracking System for Rape Kits

We helped pass a first-in-the-nation law in Washington that created a tracking system for rape kits. House Bill 2530

Discriminatory Child Custody Decision Struck Down

Because of our lawsuit, the Washington Supreme Court struck down a child custody decision that discriminated against a parent because of her sexual orientation. In re Marriage of Black

Paid Family and Medical Leave

After more than a decade of advocacy — in collaboration with the Washington Work & Family Coalition and other partners — we passed a comprehensive paid family and medical leave law in Washington state. National Campaign Against Sex Discrimination in Housing

We helped the Northwest Fair Housing Alliance develop a national education campaign focused on sex discrimination in housing. Planned Parenthod Protected from Blockaders

We won a permanent injunction that blocked anti-abortion blockaders from disrupting a Planned Parenthood clinic in Spokane (2021), and we negotiated a settlement that required the blockaders to pay $850,000 to our plaintiffs (2023). Court Rules Idaho Can’t Invalidate Pregnant People’s Living Wills

Many people must travel to Washington to get abortion or gender-affirming care. And when they do so, their home states may try to prosecute the Washington doctors who served them.
