How You Can Turn a Crisis into a Victory for Provider Safety

This story is about how an anti-abortion writer nearly put health care providers in grave danger — and how Legal Voice is helping turn that crisis into a permanent victory for provider safety.

Will you donate to fuel the systemic change we need?

The Threat Providers Faced

In 2022, the nonprofit Uplift International created the Pharmacist Abortion Access Project in Washington state. It’s a first-in-the-nation model that prepares pharmacists to prescribe medication abortion, and it has potential to address the nationwide abortion access problem.

Though the pilot program was a success, it also drew unwanted attention. Last year, an anti-abortion writer filed a dangerous public records request about the program. If the request was honored, the writer would receive the providers’ personal information.

The thought of that possibility was terrifying. Once a provider’s identity is made public, they become a target for violence and harassment.

Our Preliminary Win

When Uplift International reached out to Legal Voice for help, we immediately stepped in. Our attorneys rapidly prepared a strategy and negotiated a critical victory: the writer agreed to accept the records with all personal information redacted.

The win was a huge relief, but it was also temporary.

The Permanent Solution

To ensure long-term protection, we’re now proposing a bill to amend the Washington Public Records Act. If passed, this new law will block the government from releasing Collaborative Drug Therapy Agreements, which can contain sensitive personal information about health care providers. This legislation will help protect all health care providers, including those who provide abortion and gender-affirming care.

This is what investing in Legal Voice looks like: securing immediate safety, then creating permanent, systemic change.

Your support ensures we can protect essential health care professionals in the post-Roe era.
